Refrigerator buying guide: shop with confidence

What’s cooler than being cool? ‘Ice cold,’ a catchy song will ascertain. But the only temperature that really matters is the one you set for your fridge from IKEA. From there on you can sit back and relax – your new appliance will be ‘chilling’ along with you. We offer a wide variety of large and small and mini refrigerators and freezers in different styles and shapes. Find the one that fits perfectly into your kitchen by exploring our range. We explain the factors worth considering below, to help you in your purchasing decision.

Space and size considerations when buying a new fridge

When choosing a refrigerator, size should be the first consideration. Do you need a high cabinet solution with a fridge on top and a freezer below? Or maybe an under the counter refrigerator with a freezer compartment is a better fit? Make sure to check the dimensions to find one that fits your home before coming into the store to purchase or online. To check for correct dimensions, you’ll want to measure the depth, width and length. Be sure to leave some breathing room above the fridge or on the sides.

In addition to measurements, you’ll want to think of the storage space in the fridge which are cubic feet. Think about how much storage you want or need and if it will fit in the space you have. Smaller fridges are usually below 20 cubic feet and larger are above. Our French door refrigerators are counter depth which saves you up to 4 inches more space and blends evenly with your cabinets. If you have any questions, the sales associate at your local store can help.

Our smaller or mini refrigerators can be placed under a counter or between two cabinets – ideal for smaller kitchens with limited space. But they can be just as useful in a guest house, den, basement, dorm room or wherever you want to keep a chilled snack.

Fridges in the right style and color – stainless steel, black stainless steel, white refrigerators

You’re going to want a fridge that matches the décor of your kitchen. A good tip is matching the refrigerator with your other appliances. For instance, if your dishwasher and oven are plain white – a plain white fridge might be a good choice. Whether you want to grace your kitchen with the industrial charm of stainless steel, or are looking for modern black stainless-steel appliances, we have options for you. Fun fact: you can add magnets to our stainless-steel refrigerators which brings more personalization to your fridge!

Refrigerators with practical features

Most of our fridges come with practical functions that make your life easier. What about never having to defrost your freezer again? Choose one with automatic defrosting. Want to cool down big quantities of food quickly? Select one with fast freeze and fast cooling.

Our refrigerators offer plenty of storage both in the fridge and the freezer drawers. Adjustable shelves, multiple crispers and built-in door shelving let you arrange your food just the way you like. And, with integrated LEDs that light up every corner, you'll be able to see (and find) everything you've packed in — even that jar of pickles in the back.

Nearly all our refrigerators have adjustable shelves, transparent drawers and door compartments to make organizing and storing easier. You can easily customize the space to your needs as well, you can make it so that certain items are visible at a quick glance. Many of our shelves offer clever solutions for storing eggs, bottles, vegetables or other foods.

Some of our fridges also allow for the option of mounting the door on the right-hand or the left-hand side. This customizable freedom means you can adjust the appliance to the space you have, opening the fridge door to either right or the left depending on what is most convenient.

Smart cooling functions means less waste

Efficient cooling is a cornerstone of a sustainable kitchen. The better your fridge and freezer work, the less food you will waste. Most of our refrigerators are ENERGY STAR® rated and packed with smart functions that will keep your food fresher, longer. For example: fan cooling which ensures an even and consistent temperature, fast freeze option that quickly freezes large amounts of food or ice makers which really come in handy when you're hosting a party.

Guarantee and energy efficiency

All our fridges come with either a two- or five-year guarantee, giving you peace of mind. You can read about the warranty on the product page of each fridge.

Make sure to check the energy consumption on the product page as well. This will tell you more about the energy efficiency class of the appliance and allow you to calculate how much you can save on energy compared to your current refrigerator. With an A+, A++ or A+++ efficiency rating, you can be sure that you’re getting an energy efficient appliance with a low carbon footprint.

Ease of installation

IKEA is here to help guide you throughout your journey when looking for new appliances for your kitchen. Remember the first task you’ll want to do is measure the space you have for the refrigerator in your kitchen. Make sure to write down the width, depth and height, see more tips on measurement in the previous copy above. Tip: it’s helpful to get the measurement in front of the fridge to make space for refrigerator doors weather it opens on either side or pull-out freezer drawers. You’ll also want to keep in mind for ventilation around the fridge so keep some space either top or on the sides.

Once you've identified the space you have then you’ll want to pick out what style and color for your fridge. From there, view the different features that best fits what you’re looking for. You can either view online or in store and we will be there to help if needed!
